But just because you’re taking a break from lessons doesn’t mean your English has to take a break too—especially your speaking skills!

Speaking is often the easiest skill to lose during a long holiday. You’re not doing grammar exercises or writing in class—but without real conversation practice, it’s easy to feel a bit rusty when September comes around.

Here are six simple ways to keep speaking English over the summer—even if you’re travelling, working, or just relaxing.

☕ 1. Talk to Yourself (Yes, Really!)

Try speaking out loud during the day. For example:

“I’m making breakfast. I need a bowl, milk, and cereal.”

“It’s so hot today! I want to go swimming.”

It might feel silly at first, but it helps your brain stay in English—and you don’t need a partner!

🎙️ 2. Record Yourself

Use your phone to record a short message once a week. Talk about:

What you did this week

Your plans for the weekend

A place you visited

Then listen to it. Did you speak clearly? Did you forget any words? Would you say something differently next time?

🌍 3. Travel With English

Even if you’re not visiting an English-speaking country, you can still use English while travelling:

Read signs, menus, or websites in English

Watch travel vlogs on Social Media

Search for places in English on Google or Instagram

👯 4. Ask if they’d like to practise with you.

Even 10 minutes a week on WhatsApp or Zoom can help. Choose a fun topic:

Summer plans

Favourite food or music

“Would you rather…?” questions

Keep it relaxed and enjoy speaking!

📱 5. Switch Your Phone to English

Changing your phone language is a great trick!
