šŸŒž Summer Break… But Don’t Let Your English Go on Holiday!

School’s out, the sun is shining, and routines are changing. But just because you’re taking a break from lessons doesn’t mean your English has to take a break too—especially your speaking skills!

Speaking is often the easiest skill to lose during a long holiday. You’re not doing grammar exercises or writing in class—but without real conversation practice, it’s easy to feel a bit rusty when September comes around.

Here are six simple ways to keep speaking English over the summer—even if you’re travelling, working, or just relaxing.

ā˜• 1. Talk to Yourself (Yes, Really!)

Try speaking out loud during the day. For example:

  • ā€œI’m making breakfast. I need a bowl, milk, and cereal.ā€
  • ā€œIt’s so hot today! I want to go swimming.ā€

It might feel silly at first, but it helps your brain stay in English—and you don’t need a partner!

šŸŽ™ļø 2. Record Yourself

Use your phone to record a short message once a week. Talk about:

  • What you did this week
  • Your plans for the weekend
  • A place you visited

Then listen to it. Did you speak clearly? Did you forget any words? Would you say something differently next time?

šŸŒ 3. Travel With English

Even if you’re not visiting an English-speaking country, you can still use English while travelling:

  • Read signs, menus, or websites in English
  • Watch travel vlogs on Social Media
  • Search for places in English on Google or Instagram

šŸ‘Æ 4. Find a Speaking Buddy

Know someone else who’s learning English? Ask if they’d like to practise with you.

Even 10 minutes a week on WhatsApp or Zoom can help. Choose a fun topic:

  • Summer plans
  • Favourite food or music
  • ā€œWould you rather…?ā€ questions

Keep it relaxed and enjoy speaking!

šŸ“± 5. Switch Your Phone to English

Changing your phone language is a great trick! You’ll see English:

  • Every time you check your apps
  • When you use maps or take photos
  • In your settings and notifications

It’s an easy way to practise a little English every day—without studying.

šŸŽÆ 6. Set a Summer Challenge

Choose one small speaking goal for the summer. For example:

ā€œI want to talk for two minutes about my summer holiday when school starts.ā€

Practise a little each week. In September, you’ll feel more confident and ready to speak!
